So fresh from finishing Another I must say I'm pretty mixed about it in general. For context, here is the the synopsis courtesy of Yosho from the Another wiki page:
26 years ago, in a third-year classroom of a middle school, there was a student named Misaki. As an honors student who was also good at sports, the charming girl was popular with her classmates. When she suddenly died, her classmates decided to carry on as if she was still alive until graduation. Then, in the spring of 1998, a boy named Sakakibara Kouichi transfers to the class, and he grows suspicious of the fearful atmosphere in that classroom. In particular, there is a beautiful, aloof girl named Mei Misaki who wears an eyepatch and is always alone drawing pictures.
So after reading that, I was psyched for Another. Whilst I'm not a fan of horror, I don't dislike it either and the first episodes of Another show this.
After watching 3 episodes, I was fearful of watching further ones too late. It was that freaky. The story hooked me so much as well, from the mysterious Misaki Mei and the person who started the whole "curse" also being named Misaki was a great cliff hanger every episode. It was like solving a mystery with clues already pointing to the culprit from the get go.
Like, look at that face, doesn't it scream mysterious and sus to you? from the pale skin, the dark black hair and the eye patch! Misaki Mei was a damn great character and her lack of emotion was just icing on the cake for any horror story.
But with everything going so good, I was damn sceptical and rightly so. Upon starting the series, I was fearful of one thing -Episode after episode of pointless deaths and Another did exactly this.
By episode 4 onwards, any mystery about Another was overshadowed by a pointless death. Every.Damn.Episode. And this aggravated me immensely. Remember what I said above about being too chicken to watch another episode too late? Well I was marathoning episodes at 3am with -_- eyes because I knew what to expect, I knew a death was coming and was just eyeing useless side-characters that would slip in each episode randomly just for them to die 15 minutes later.
Hey look! Happy beach episode!
From here on, Another pretty much became a gore fest and I was pretty much "loling" when it came to the second last episode when people were dropping left, right and centre because the nature of the deaths were so random. In particular, this scene:
Whilst Another had an amazing start, it severely disappointed in exactly where I thought it would go wrong -a torture/death fest every episode. With that said, I would have to rate Another:
